Cardiology, Senior Specialist VGH Gozo General Hospital [closed]

To provide Cardiology service at Gozo General Hospital (GGH) within the quality standards of the profession.

The successful applicant would be expected to participate actively in the development of a dedicated state of the art Cardiology Unit. As the department develops s/he will be expected to collaborate with various Clinical, Nursing, Allied Health and Technical colleagues to provide a high standard of holistic patient care through a multidisciplinary approach

 

Main duties and responsibilities include:

  • Assist with the development and implementation of new cardiology investigative and treatment modalities both invasive and non-invasive and services including acquisition of new equipment and systems, staff selection and training;
  • Provide emergency cardiology support including attending to emergencies in hospital within the shortest time possible. In the interest of patient safety, on call rotas in Gozo General require the specialist to be on the island of Gozo for the duration of the on-call period;
  • Oversee the development of elective and emergency cardiology protocols and guidelines in line with required standards and regulatory obligations both for management of GGH patients as well as for patients to be referred out to tertiary centers;
  • Help maintain and further develop liaison with MDH and other tertiary centers to facilitate specialist referral of cardiology patients whose care/investigation requirements are outside the remit of GGH service capacity;
  • Carrying out duties at others VGH hospitals as and when necessary;
  • Daily ward round duties, Out-patient clinics for new referrals and follow-ups;
  • Provide advice and consultations to clinical colleagues in other specialties;
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with clinical colleagues in other specialties and participate in regular multidisciplinary clinical and administrative meetings;
  • Provide supervision of non-consultant senior, middle grade and junior staff/trainees as well as department technical staff;
  • Demonstrate a firm involvement in clinical governance, risk management and clinical audit – this includes the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice and the supervision of implementation of these practices by colleagues in the field;
  • Keep abreast with the current developments in the fields of Cardiology pertinent to the service at GGH and participating in postgraduate meetings locally and abroad. S/he will be required to involve themselves in the on-going education of clinical and technical colleagues at all levels especially as new services and techniques are developed;
  • Be accountable for improving and complying with quality improvement and patient safety, including infection control practices;
  • Make appropriate and full use of hospital resources, data and information technology to ensure optimal patient diagnosis and management;
  • Lead or participate in research initiatives in collaboration with colleagues and students as appropriate, including other institutes both locally and abroad.

Qualifications:

  • Specialist Accreditation in Cardiology with a recognized institution
  • Listed on, or eligible for inclusion on the specialist register of the Medical Council of Malta as Cardiology Specialist
  • Applicants must have two (2) years full time experience as a specialist in the speciality

 

Interested applicants are required to provide all information and documentation necessary for proper evaluation of the application. Applications shall contain the following information:

  • An updated CV including the applicant’s contact details. This should include a list of hospitals and posts held since registration and dates of employment at the hospitals worked at over the previous 10 years or since registration if registered for less than 10 years;
  • Photo identity documents issued by the applicant’s country of origin or country of residence (valid ID card/ Passport);
  • Eligibility for employment in Malta by virtue of being a citizen of Malta or of an EU member state or by virtue of being granted Long Term Resident Status. Applications from individuals without this eligibility may be considered for posts if no suitable applicants with the necessary eligibility have applied and their eventual employment would depend on the acquisition of a work permit by the employer/Human Resources department of the Hospital as per the terms of the Immigration Act (Chapter 217);
  • List of qualifications with sufficient information to facilitate primary source verification of these qualifications;
  • Names and contact details of 3 referees from the previous 5 years of employment/training. These referees should be able to validate the applicant’s proficiency in the following areas of competency: Patient care, Medical/clinical knowledge, Practice based learning and Improvement, Interpersonal and communication skills, Professionalism and System based practice;
  • Certification of a valid licence to practice in Malta from the Medical Council of Malta or evidence of eligibility to do so;
  • Certification of Good Standing with the Medical Council of Malta or of the specialist accreditation body the applicant is currently working under within three months of application;
  • Certificate of Conduct issued by the Police or other competent authority not earlier than three (3) months from date of application.

 

Interested candidates shall be proficient in the English language provided that due recognition will be given to candidates who also have the ability to communicate in the Maltese Language.
