Health & Safety Manager for VGH Gozo General Hospital

The Health and Safety Manager at VGH Gozo General Hospital will be responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of the Hospital’s Health and Safety management, to ensure the safety of patients, staff, students, visitors and contractors, in line with current Health and Safety and associated legislation across Gozo General Hospital. Main duties and responsibilities include:

  • Work closely with the VGH Senior Health & Safety Manager to develop and embed a Health and Safety Policy and ensure that it is implemented consistently across the hospital.
  • Monitor, evaluate and review existing, new and upcoming Health and Safety legislation and ensure that Gozo General Hospital has systems and procedures in place to meet legal compliance.
  • Work proactively with the Senior Health and Safety Manager and other managers and key staff to establish and maintain a programme of continuous improvement in the management of Health and Safety within their areas of responsibility, which includes conducting regular audits and training
  • Ensure that rigorous risk assessment and accident management systems are in place to enable Gozo General Hospital to undertake risk assessment processes to identify hazards and to ensure that appropriate control measures are in place.
  • Maintain a central record of all risk assessments. Ensure that risk assessments are conducted and approved for new initiatives and projects.
  • Discuss areas for improvement with relevant staff and/or external bodies and agree appropriate corrective action.
  • Ensure that fire risk assessments according to an agreed schedule and in line with legal requirements.
  • Be responsible for the Occupational Health & Safety of employees.
  • Provide GGH staff with comprehensive and relevant information and training on the company’s Health and Safety systems and procedures, including advising on equipment purchase and workplace practices.
  • Ensures that any risks or issues identified are assessed. Action plans are drawn up and implemented to address root causes.
  • Maintain the accident and ‘near miss’ database and prepare reports for GGH management, using statistical and other analytical tools.
  • Undertake the planning and implementation of fire drills and other evacuation procedures.
  • Ensure that appropriate records are maintained in compliance with legal requirements
  • Design and deliver training sessions on key areas of Hospital activity in relation to Health and Safety and support the delivery of other training programmes, including new staff induction.
  • Be a member of the Hospital’s Health and Safety Committee, Criminal Convictions Panel and Safeguarding Committee and actively promote a safe environment throughout the Hospital.
  • Keep themselves updated through training on Health and Safety legislation and the application of key policies and advise management of key developments and areas for change/improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with, and implementation of, all VGH policies and procedures that impact on the delivery of effective Health and Safety systems within the Hospital.

The selected candidate should:

  • Possess a Diploma qualification in Health and Safety issued by the University of Malta (or any foreign institution duly recognized by the UOM) in Health and Safety, certified by MQRIC at level 5 or higher in the subject.
  • Have a at least 2 years’ experience as an H&S Manager,
  • Registered on the Competent Persons Register kept by the Occupational Health and Safety Authority;
  • Be assertive with excellent communication skills both verbal and written;
  • Possess strong analytical and decision-making skills;
  • Have experience in risk management;
  • Be flexible with a positive and can-do attitude.
