Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery, Senior Specialist (Consultant) [closed]

The Orthopaedic and Trauma Senior Specialist will provide consultant level clinical care within the remit of the specialty of Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery according to the service need and the quality standards of the profession and collaborate with established Consultants/Specialists to provide a high standard of cover in Orthopaedics and Trauma on a 24/7 basis in a general acute secondary care level hospital, and participate in a multidisciplinary approach to provide holistic patient care including post-operative rehabilitation.

Responsibilities and Duties include:
• Provide supervision of non-consultant senior, middle grade and junior staff/trainees

• Participation in a seamless emergency on-call rota including attending to emergencies in hospital as and when required within the shortest time possible. In the interest of patient safety, on call rotas in Gozo General require the specialist to be on the island of Gozo for the duration of the on-call period

• Assist with the development of new Orthopaedic services for management of trauma and elective cases including acquisition of new operating systems and training of OT and assisting staff

• Provide advice and consultations to clinical colleagues in other specialties

• Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with clinical colleagues in other specialties and participate in regular clinical meetings

• Participate in the development of the Orthopaedics and Trauma-related treatment protocols and guidelines and relevant committees, in line with required standards and regulatory obligations

• Demonstrate a firm involvement in clinical governance, risk management and clinical audit – this includes the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice and the supervision of implementation of these practices by colleagues in the field

• Keep abreast with the current developments in the field of Orthopedics and Trauma and participating in postgraduate meetings locally and abroad. S/he will be required to involve themselves in the on-going education of clinical colleagues at all levels especially as new services and techniques are developed

• Be accountable for improving and complying with quality improvement and patient safety, including infection control practices

Qualifications

• Certification of training in Orthopaedics with a recognized institution

• Listed on, or eligible for inclusion on the specialist register of the Medical Council of Malta

• Able to communicate effectively in English and/or Maltese language verbally and in writing;
