Paediatrics, Senior Specialist (Consultant) [closed]

To provide consultant level Paediatric service at Gozo General Hospital (GGH) according to the service requirements

The successful applicant would form part of a team of 3 consultant/senior specialist paediatricians to render a general paediatric service from GGH which would include cover of all births in GGH, emergency and investigative admissions as well as supervision of transport of infant and paediatric patients to MDH and/or other VGH Hospitals when the patients’ care requirements exceed the remit of GGH. An interest in the development of a community paediatric service would be required.


Main duties and responsibilities include:

  • Coverage of daily ward duties including assessment of newborn infants; outpatient services which may be allocated to afternoon clinics and would cater for new referrals, follow-ups of acute admissions, infant and child postnatal and milestone development
  • Participation in an emergency first-on-call rota including attending to emergency Caesarian sections and complicated deliveries, as well as emergency admissions and when required within the shortest time possible. In the interest of patient safety, on call rotas in GGH require the specialist to be on the island of Gozo for the duration of the on-call period. On call cover requires flexibility with colleagues to facilitate a seamless 24/7 cover especially with regards to participation in transfer of seriously ill infants and paediatric patients to MDH.
  • Carrying out duties at other VGH hospitals as and when necessary;
  • Provide regular review and assistance with management of surgical and surgical subspecialty patients of paediatric age and provide advice and consultations to clinical colleagues in other specialties;
  • Help maintain and further develop liaison with MDH to facilitate specialist referral of paediatric patients whose care/investigation requirements are outside the remit of GGH service capacity;
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with clinical colleagues in other specialties and participate in regular multidisciplinary clinical, administrative and committee meetings;
  • Help develop mechanisms and protocols to facilitate family liaison and community outreach paediatric services;
  • Provide supervision of non-consultant senior, middle grade and junior staff/trainees;
  • Demonstrate a firm involvement in clinical governance, risk management and clinical audit – this includes the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice and the supervision of implementation of these practices by colleagues in the field;
  • Keep abreast with the current developments in the fields of Paediatrics pertinent to the service at GGH and participating in postgraduate meetings locally and abroad. S/he will be required to involve themselves in the on-going education of clinical colleagues at all levels especially as new services and techniques are developed;
  • Be accountable for improving and complying with quality improvement and patient safety, including infection control practices.

  • Specialist Accreditation in Paediatrics with a recognized institution
  • Listed on, or eligible for inclusion on the specialist register of the Medical Council of Malta as Specialist  in Paediatrics


Interested applicants are required to provide all information and documentation necessary for proper evaluation of the application. Applications shall contain the following information:

  • An updated CV including the applicants contact details. This should include a list of hospitals and posts held since registration and dates of employment at the hospitals worked at over the previous 10 years or since registration if registered for less than 10 years;
  • Photo identity documents issued by the applicant’s country of origin or country of residence (valid ID card, Passport, drivers’ license);
  • Eligibility for employment in Malta by virtue of being a citizen of Malta or of an EU member state or by virtue of being granted Long Term Resident Status. Applications from individuals without this eligibility may be considered for posts if no suitable applicants with the necessary eligibility have applied and their eventual employment would depend on the acquisition of a work permit by the employer/Human Resources department of the Hospital as per the terms of the Immigration Act (Chapter 217);
  • List of qualifications with sufficient information to facilitate primary source verification of these qualifications;
  • Names and contact details of 3 referees from the previous 5 years of employment/training. These referees should be able to validate the applicant’s proficiency in the following areas of competency: Patient care, Medical/clinical knowledge, Practice based learning and Improvement, Interpersonal and communication skills, Professionalism and System based practice;
  • Certification of a valid licence to practice in Malta from the Medical Council of Malta or evidence of eligibility to do so;
  • Certification of Good Standing with the Medical Council of Malta or of the specialist accreditation body the applicant is currently working under within three months of application.
  • Certificate of Conduct issued by the Police or other competent authority not earlier than three (3) months from date of application.


Interested candidates shall be proficient in the English language provided that due recognition will be given to candidates who also have the ability to communicate in the Maltese Language.
